The racecourse at Hatcham was in Hatcham Park, within the grounds of Hatcham Manor which was a chapelry in London near to New Cross in what is now the Borough of Lewisham. It first held races from Wednesday 20th to Thursday 21st July 1842 when billed as the 'New City of London' meeting. On the opening day the Hatcham Stakes was won by Revoke for Mr Hornsby, but on the second day he had to settle for second place behind Soloman in the New Cross Sweepstake. Despite having a large population to call upon, the meeting only lasted for a further 3 years. Its penultimate races, a 2 day meeting on Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th July 1844, opened with the New Cross Handicap which saw Dahlia beat Molly Mogg and Paradise, while the Hatcham Park Stakes went to Mr Messer’s Syntaxina. The final meeting took place on Tuesday 12th August 1845. |
